6 Effective Ways You Can Cut Your Petrol Cost

April 29, 2026 admin No comments yet

It is a widely accepted reality that the cost of living in Malaysia has increased significantly. One of the most impactful daily necessities affected by this trend is the cost of petrol. Because fuel is a primary driver for logistics and transportation, even a slight increase in price can ripple through the economy, affecting the cost of everything from food to basic services.

For many Malaysians, depending on a car or motorcycle is essential for daily life. Fortunately, there are scientifically proven ways to optimize your fuel consumption and reduce your monthly expenditures. By making small adjustments to your driving habits and vehicle maintenance, you can keep more money in your pocket.

6 Strategic Adjustments for Better Fuel Economy

1. Stop Idling While You Wait

One of the simplest ways to save fuel is to turn off your engine if you expect to be stationary for more than 30 seconds. Whether you are waiting to pick up a loved one or need to make a phone call, keeping the engine idling is unproductive. An idling engine consumes petrol without keeping the vehicle in motion, essentially wasting fuel for no gain.

If your vehicle is equipped with an “eco-mode,” make sure to activate it. The start-stop feature in these models is specifically designed to reduce fuel consumption by automatically managing the engine when you apply the brakes—a feature that is particularly beneficial when you are stuck in heavy traffic.

2. Prioritize Regular Vehicle Maintenance

Proper maintenance does more than just sustain the health of your car; it directly improves fuel efficiency. It is vital to set reminders for your next service date to ensure your engine is running at peak performance.

Beyond the engine, pay close attention to your tires. Driving with under-inflated tires increases fuel consumption because it creates more resistance on the road. By ensuring your tires are always well-inflated to the recommended levels, you allow your vehicle to move more effortlessly, saving you money at the pump.

3. Mind Your Speed and Driving Habits

How you drive is just as important as what you drive. To maximize fuel efficiency, try to stay within the speed limit. Research suggests that smooth driving at speeds between 50 km/h and 90 km/h is the most effective way to save petrol.

Avoid aggressive driving habits, such as rapid acceleration and sudden braking. These actions force the engine to work harder and consume significantly more fuel. By maintaining a steady pace and anticipating traffic flow, you can ensure a more fuel-efficient journey.

4. Clear Out Unnecessary Weight

Your vehicle’s weight directly impacts its fuel consumption. Take a moment to check your trunk or boot for heavy items that don’t need to be there. Carrying extra weight forces the engine to use more energy to move the vehicle. By removing unnecessary clutter and keeping your car as light as possible, you can noticeably improve your fuel economy.

5. Plan Your Routes Strategically

In a busy country like Malaysia, traffic jams are a major contributor to fuel waste. To combat this, use navigation apps like Waze or Google Maps to identify shorter routes and real-time traffic conditions. Whenever possible, plan your trips to avoid driving during peak hours. By bypassing congestion and finding the most direct path to your destination, you reduce the time your engine spent running and save on petrol.

6. Consider Carpooling or Public Transport

When feasible, carpooling with colleagues or friends is a highly effective way to cut costs. By sharing a ride, you immediately reduce your individual petrol consumption. For those living in areas with strong infrastructure, using public transport is an even more drastic way to save. Beyond just petrol, these alternatives help you avoid the added costs of tolls and parking fees, significantly lowering your total monthly transportation budget.

Government Initiatives and Fuel Subsidies

The Malaysian government has introduced several initiatives to assist underprivileged groups in managing rising fuel costs:

Bantuan Sara Hidup (BSH) Recipients

Under Budget 2020 initiatives, car owners receive RM30 monthly, while motorcycle owners receive RM12.

  • Car Criteria: Engine capacity of 1600cc or lower, or vehicles over 10 years old.
  • Motorcycle Criteria: Engine capacity below 150cc, or motorcycles over 7 years old.

Note: This is applicable to one vehicle per individual, and residents in East Malaysia are not entitled to this specific subsidy.

Kad95 for Non-BSH Motorists

Individuals who do not receive BSH can utilize a Kad95. This card provides a petrol discount of 30 cents per litre. The subsidy is limited to 100 litres per month for cars and 40 litres per month for motorcycles.

Ceiling Rate

At the time of writing, the price of RON95 is maintained at a ceiling rate of RM2.08.

Conclusion

Focusing on these six areas will help you increase your monthly savings and manage the rising cost of living more effectively. While these tips help with daily expenditures, unexpected vehicle issues can still arise. For times when you need extra funds for an emergency car repair, a small personal loan can serve as a helpful resource to get you back on the road.

By being mindful of your driving habits and staying informed about available subsidies, you can take full control of your petrol consumption and your overall financial health.
